"Turbans! I love how almost every woman tied beautiful fabric around her head. I especially love when the pattern of the head wrap and that of the rest of an outfit mismatched. Lookout, Seattle, I brought 17 scarves home to do this with."

"This elegant woman stood out to me immediately upon entering the village. I couldn't take my eyes off her gold on gold outfit she wore to listen to a lecture on farming. Total babe."

"I set out with the intention to document more West African fashion then I ended up with. Most of my time was spent in urban areas that were more westernized (boring), but in rural villages, the attire was traditional (kind of a trip). As someone who spends life in neutrals, the intense color combinations and patterns were overstimulating and such a foreign concept to me. The film that I used was a few years expired and the shots turned out dull and grainy, so you can imagine how vibrant this would be to the naked eye."

Describe your profession

I'm a sustainable feng shui interior designer. I've been doing it since 1998.

How did it start?

My father was an architect and so was my mother. My grandma was an artist. I originally wanted to do professional theater. I went into the visual arts world-- ran an art gallery in college. It didn't fit, it felt too high brow. One day, when I was at the airport I picked up this really dry and traditional book on feng shui and it all of a sudden just clicked. Within two years I was making a lot of recommendations and everything turned into a design solution. In 2004, sustainability became a huge role. There was more mindfulness about sustainability as a practice.

Where did you run a gallery?

South Oregon University. The school had a bunch of professional opportunities. It was so fun to push the envelope with booking artists. I got to work with a lot of great people over the years such as Lynn Basa and Linda Hodges.

Do you still do theater?

No, but I'm doing Living Sensual (3-5 minute videos interviews) with my husband about what lights people up and makes them happy. We want to expose people to really inspirational people in all walks of expression and send a message of conscious beauty.

If you could be anywhere, Where would you be?

India. I have a huge interest in Indian spirituality. I would love to learn more about Vastu-- the indian form of feng shui. It has many of the same principles of the Japanese feng shui. A lot to do with how toy think-- shifting an environment has a lot to do with positive mindset.

Are there any fashion designers that inspire you?

Donna Karen for her casual sophistication. Betsy Johnson for her wild flare. Chanel when it felt like Chanel, it doesn't feel like that to me anymore. And of course Alexander McQueen because of the way he pushed his ideas to the edge and his artful expression.

What's the trait you admire most in a friend?

Authenticity.

Adventure! I moved out here less than a week after graduating from college.

How did you start making jewelry?

I got a job at a bead store and learned how to make jewelry there.

How did you start &c. Jewelry?

I knew as soon as I started making jewelry that I wanted to get it out there, that it was something I wanted to do. I come from an art background so the ultimate goal is to always to be able to hopefully support yourself off of what you make. It seemed natural.

What inspires your jewelry line?

Some of my influences are Alejandro Jordorowski, mythology, and my grandmother's choctaw. All of these things tie into the history of jewelry making and what it's function is.

Where can people find your jewelry?

In Seattle I sell at a handful of stores; Cairo, Object, Velouria, Ghost Gallery. Rad Summer in Portland is one of my favs and the newly launched Craft & Culture website is beautiful, so happy to be doing work with them.

The matriarchs of my family (my mother and my grandmother). They're badass ladies who don't take shit.

Are you from Seattle?

I was raised in Hawaii, lived there until I was 16. I've been in Seattle for the past 13 years. I think there is something mystical about this city. I like the dark and rainy mood.

How did you choose the name Indian Summer?

My mom had a antique store when I was younger that was a big influence on me. At home, I would pretend to have a shop and I called it Indian Summer and I would have neighborhood friends come by. It was meant to be.

What are your fashion influences?

Houlston, Alexander McQueen, african style, native tribe, more feathers, more beads, more turquoise the better. And of course, all my pretty friends.

How did you get into fashion?

My parents are really into clothes. My Dad is very GQ and my Mom has the best collection I've ever seen, very gypsie inspired and vintage 70's. Back in the day, my parents were Washington state disco champions and I loved looking at old photos of them.

Do you have any fashion faux pas?

wearing uggs and headset headphones in public, sneakers, and low rise jeans.

Favorite past times?

Live music, thrifting, dinner parties, playing music, & dancing.

If you could be anywhere, where would you be?

At the Carnival of Brazil surrounded by all the festival dancers or at the Rose Bowl flea market in California.

What do you never leave the house without?

lipstick, change of shoes, & a flask

What's something you're looking forward to?

My winter collection. It's going to be really icy, real norway style with huge sweaters and a pale color palette.

What's your life advise?

Pump up the volume. Wear it because you only live once. People always say they don't have a place or event to wear certain pieces. That's not true. Wear it to the grocery store, and get a couple compliments and go home.

Joanne Sugura of Pariscope Studios, invites me into her work space. She showcases some of her recent work which includes necklaces with adjustable zippers and plymouth, wire/mesh netting, and old book pages. A lot of the materials Joanne uses are from Paris and all other parts of the world. I found her pieces to be truly unique and innovative in jewelry design.

Featured above are pieces of an antique ivory retractable tape measurer holder. It broke and turned into all these beautiful things.

What's been your proudest moment in the past year?

good feed back, encouragement, and sales for Pariscope Studios. Also recently making connections with boutique owners that are taking a chance on us and really understand our work. That makes me proud.

Can you tell me a little more about Pariscope?

It was formed in January of this year with my friend and colleague, Elena Korakianitou. We rely on the old japanese philosophy Wabi-Sabi which means the appreciation of discarded and decayed (bones, broken things, pages of old books) and giving it a renewal and then incorporate into something new.

Have you always had an interest in jewelry design?

I received a BA in sculpture at Portland State and went on to get my MFA at Pratt Institute in NYC where I met my husband. About two years ago, Elena asked if I'd help her get ready for a show and it went really well so that sparked the collaboration.

What influences your jewelry?

diversity of materials, antique tapestry, rubber gaskets, and found objects

What and/or who are your fashion influences?
I tend to like things that look like dancers might have worn. Architecture is also a big influence of mine. For people I would say, Coco Chanel (because she liberated women in terms of clothing), Sonia Wrinkle, and Rodarte.

What are some of your fashion faux pas?
unflattering short shorts and sundresses with cowboy boots

What are a few things you never leave the house without?
lipstick and bottled water

What's your vice?
I don't think I have any because I love everything I do; social, art, film etc. I think if you love so much about life you can't make a category of vice.

So I'm pretty sure that the past few weeks were merely a series of dreams, the most wondrous and captivating of dreams. I spent the last 14 days in Paris. While I was there I saw the most beautiful people and architecture, ate the finest foods, hung out in cafes for hours, sat in parks, sipped on espresso, snacked on many macaroons, people watched at haute couture fashion shows, and drank plenty of champagne.

I wanted my outfits to be simple and classic. I'm a sucker for stripes and wore them almost everyday with essential accessories such as Ray-Ban sunglasses and a straw hat (which I bought at a really darling hat boutique in the Marais called Celine Roberts).

What is inspiring your 2011 spring/summer looks?

I adore what fellow Somali ladies behind the lovely brand Mataano (which means 'Twins' in Somali) are doing. Their SS11 collection is pretty spot on. I'm also inspired by classic feminine pieces, the early 70s, young Cher, white dresses, ladies in fiction, and everything everyone wears in the film Broadway Melody of 1940.

What's your dream color palette?

Nude!

How do you typically spend a friday night?

My friday nights are usually spent dining out and/or cuddling by the record player to a good vinyl record. On occasion I have been known to go to a function of sorts.

What's something you never leave the house without?

I never leave the house without (my) soul.

Do you have any plans you're looking forward to this summer?

Living in San Francisco with my boyfriend. I'll be interning for law and civil rights.

What is a fashion faux pas of yours?

One fashion faux pas that I see committed a lot is the wearing of UGG boots. They are ghastly; I have no clue how they ever became popular. Two fashion faux pas that I also cannot stand are when men look sloppy and also when women look the opposite of classy. I try not to commit any of the fashion faux pas I've listed above.

What's on your spring soundtrack?

So much fleetwood Mac, Simon & Garfunkel, and Tchaikovsky.

When I was 21, myself and my boyfriend at the time, backpacked across Europe from London to Turkey. It was a four month long journey. We barely had any money and we just couch surfed.

Last weekend I went over to my Grandmother's house and I found a lovely surprise. Laying on her coffee table were scrap books of old photographs from when she first moved to Seattle in 1942 and when she met my Grandfather at Boeing.

I wanted to share a little bit of my family history with all of you because I genuinely miss how young people dressed back then. Outfits weren't as lazily thought out as they are today. There was no north faces, Ugg boots, and juicy sweat pants. Instead there was fur jackets, tailored suits, trousers, and heels.
